Mississippi Queen is the reissue of the 1997 Spiel Des Jahres, an original, simple but tactical and opportunistic racing game to draw situations from the river and the position of the opponents.
The game includes the Black Rose extension
Game Play:
In Mississippi Queen, each player plays a boat captain and will sail on the Mississippi to complete the race, first docking on a pontoon where the jubilant crowd is waiting, with two passengers on board during his trip.
Each boat has two wheels that can be rotated. One of them allows choosing the speed of displacement, while the second represents the quantity of coal available for the whole race. The whole Mississippi Queen strategy is in both the speed of movement and the consumption of coal.
Know how to manage your coal
If it makes sense to go as fast as possible to win a race, the captain will be subject to a number of constraints.
First of all, he will have to be economical in his speed changes. Indeed, the chosen speed will be the number of huts that the ship will have to cross during its turn. Thus, increasing or decreasing its speed by turning the wheel by one notch, does not consume coal.
But if the captain orders strong rises in power to accelerate or decelerate, the boat consumes coal, a coal per additional notch beyond the first!
Moreover, to shoot with this kind of boat, a little clumsy, is not simple as in the reality. Also, this one will travel crossing the hexagonal hexes of the river tiles. If the first turn is free, the others on the same turn will consume coal, knowing that a turn consists of turning only one side of the hex. Here too, it will be economical and well predict its movements.
Where it gets complicated is that you will only have 6 coals to complete the trip!
Indeed, do not forget that you will have to take turns to avoid running aground on an island. Then remember that you must take on board, two charming passengers waiting for you, umbrella in hand, on the pontoons of a few islets. And for this, it will dock at a reasonable speed, ie at a minimum!
Finally, your competitors will probably do everything to put you in the wheel (paddle). Thus, they will be able to stand across your passage, or even push you! Knowing that he will be able to choose one of the adjacent squares and not necessarily the one placed in front of you. And yes, it's a race, not a pleasure ride. The opponents will be ruthless!
You will therefore be expected to anticipate all your maneuvers for the next rounds so you do not get stuck and consume as little coal as possible!
